OBAMA FOR DEMOCRATS

by Lord Zoltan 5. February 2008 22:21

It's Super Tuesday - so here's my two units of currency

Now I'm not an American, but I do like to think of myself as a politically aware citizen of the world (though I'd never pretend to have a good knowledge of all sides of any political debate - after all, we're all driven by our own beliefs right!?) and in that capacity I'd say that the best thing that could happen in America right now is for Mr Barrack Obama to be elected as the Democrat candidate for the elections later this year.

If Obama becomes the candidate, then I feel that the opportunity for public debate about some of the most important issues within American society get a chance to be aired properly.  I'm talking especially about race here because, frankly America, some parts of your country terrifies me and many other people with it's attitude to non-Caucasion people - and with these kind of views still a predominant feature of much of your society it is then hard not to view the recent foreign policies as anything other than xenophobic to say the least.  Having a man of African American decent as even the candidate, let alone actually getting to the Whitehouse (which I seriously believe he could do) would do so much to counteract this view.

Symbolism, yes, but there's much more to Obama than race - and it would be simply irresponsible to elect him purely based on this.  Listen to his speeches - he is a leader.  He has ideas and he really seems to have a desire to do good things to your country and with the world.  Having a younger president would probably be a good move as well - as I think it'll take somebody who has more of an understanding of the past (but who hasn't necessarily lived it and who hasn't got an emotional involvement with it) in order to overcome some of the sticking points with foreign policy and internal affairs.

Change?

With Hillary you do kinda think why move from one dynasty to another.  Bill was good (he might have been flawed in many ways - but he was stellar compared to Mr Bush), but Hillary is not going to be better!  How can Hillary recycle Obama's mantra about change when she's already lived in the Whitehouse once before?  It's not a change, it's more of the same - except she is clearly far more divisive.

She's definitely a politician that is willing to use a situation to her advantage, going for the 'money' policies which are going to pick up the most people along the way.  Obama doesn't seem like this - he's been talking more about ideologies, rather than simply pimping himself with popularist policies.

Beyond that, Hillary just seems wrong.  It's all too professional and staged - too much like going through the motions in order to get into power...  I'm sure the desire is there, but I'm starting to think that it's driven by a need to be in power rather than a desire to make a true difference.  It must be hard to give up that life in the big house when you've had it before is all I can say...

I'm probably missing many things out here - ultimately I don't live over there, and I don't know everything that's being said, or what's going on or whatever - but I can tell you that B.O looks like the next president from where I'm sitting.  And I think it would be a real turning point in your history if it were to happen.

So do the right thing now, pick him as the candidate!
