Apparently nearly all UK government departments still use IE6 (with it’s 200+ known security flaws, even with the latest patches) as their main browser – read this BBC article.
This is lunacy, given the ramifications involved from a potential security breach.
As the article says – there is a petition to demand that the government gets rid of it – which points out that both the French and German governments both recently issued guidance to the same effect. Everybody should do their bit, too.
It’s also holding back creativity because of the, albeit diminishing, requirement to continue to support IE6 on web pages placed on software houses that do any web-work work for the government (and indeed most other businesses – I know of so many big commercial businesses still using IE6; even banks!).
Okay – I know – there are other browsers out there (I personally love Chrome) – but for large organisations running the MS platform, IE is the easiest to roll out – so they need to upgrade now – it’s so easy to do!
Sign the petition – it’ll take you only a few minutes!
